"Good Morning –
WELCOME BACK from Hippodrome Foundation, Inc. (HFI)
I am sending you information about the Hippodrome Foundation’s Young Critics Program and hope you will contact me if you have any questions.
My name is Barb Wirsing and as most of you already know, I am the Education Director for HFI. Our mission is to increase community access to the arts – and one way to do that is through our Young Critics Program. The Young Critics Program not only provides access to entertainment – it encourages/assists local students with an interest in writing to improve their skills. For the 2012/2013 season, HFI has again hired professional critic, Geoffrey Himes, to lead and instruct 10 students every semester.
HFI will provide critics with two complimentary tickets each to three productions at the Hippodrome and in exchange, participants will write a review and submit it to Geoffrey Himes. Geoffrey will send back edits to each student via email and there will be one or two rewrites before the review is finished. Finished reviews are posted on HFI’s website and can be found at www.hippodromefoundation.org.
Attendance is mandatory and the dates are listed below. Geoffrey will teach a class at our offices
for an hour before each production plus a preliminary class– we serve sandwiches so nobody will miss dinner. The dates for the upcoming fall semester are as follows:
Tuesday, November 13 - Preliminary Class (6:30PM to 8:00PM)
Tuesday, November 27 - Million Dollar Quartet (6:30PM to 7:30PM - show begins at 8:00PM)
Saturday, December 15 - Nutcracker (6:00PM to 7:00PM - show begins at 7:30PM)
Tuesday, January 22 - Beauty and the Beast (6:00 PM to 7:00PM - begins at 7:30PM)
High school critics should be juniors and 100% committed to this program and must attend all mandatory dates and classes.
It is a very individual experience and some of our critics write very well - if a student is a great writer, his/her skills will still improve through this program. And past participants have really enjoyed meeting students from other area schools.
